Meet Team Embody YOGA! We vary in terms of our personalities, teaching styles and approach to the practice of yoga. What we share is our desire to share the practice of yoga with all. Continue reading to learn more about each of us.
Joanna is a registered yoga teacher and the owner of Embody YOGA. Joanna first developed an interest in yoga as a teenager. Over the years, she experimented with various forms of physical fitness and dance before returning to the practice in 2011. Joanna started her business, Embody YOGA, with the mission to share the practice of yoga with people of color by offering classes that are accessible, affordable and culturally relevant. Since its founding in 2015, Embody YOGA has served over 300 students (young and old), the majority of whom identify as people of color. Nothing brings her more joy than to witness her students develop a personal relationship and connection to the practice of yoga.
Jamila is a newly certified yoga teacher and one of the original members of the Embody Yoga family. Dance is what originally brought her to the mat. Her first desire to do yoga was to increase her flexibility so that she could be a better dancer. She quickly learned that her history and discipline in dance and tae kwon do gave her a natural ease in practice and she quickly fell in love. The benefits off the mat drew her to wanting more people to experience yoga. Joanna was a great influence on her becoming a yoga teacher. One thing led to another thing which led to another thing and now she is a yoga teacher. She is committed to advancing the Embody Yoga mission to “share the practice of yoga with people of color” and has her own mission to share the practice of yoga with the faith community in a way that aligns with the Gospel. She truly believes that connecting with the breath through yoga allows her to connect with He who gives the breath. Her love for God and His people are evident in her classes through the musical selections, her class theming, and cues. Yoga is about balance, and by her being a dancer she has a love for ALL music which is also evidenced in her classes.
Embarking on a spiritual, self-love journey, Shayla was first was introduced to yoga in January of 2017. Through yoga Shayla has become stronger mentally, physically and spiritually and would like to share the value of having a daily yoga routine with others. Shayla’s personal mission is to provide direction and clarity to people across the world and to help them tap into their full potential. She believes whole heartedly that yoga is a major key to that process. She recently completed a 200 hr yoga teacher training program at YogaOne.
Daniela is currently completing her 200 hour teacher training program with Inner Light Yoga Studios. Daniela’s yoga practice has helped her in every aspect of her life; she is stronger (physically, spiritually, emotionally and mentally), she has increased flexibility and has become more confident and fearless, both on and off the mat. Yoga increases self-confidence, self-love as well as one’s ability to be more mindful and present. As a yoga professional, Daniela would like to share this with every student that takes her class.
